Official launch and Pixel availability

Google released the stable version of Android 17 on June 16, 2026, moving the launch cycle to the first half of the year. Unlike previous generations, the initial rollout focused on the Pixel 11 series, but official compatibility extends to Pixel 6, Pixel 7, Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 models, including Pro, XL, and Fold variants. This broad support ensures Google's user base accesses new security features without needing to renew their devices.

In Spain, all these devices have already received the update. The most notable change for the average user is not just performance, but permission management: Android 17 allows granting temporary location access, preventing apps from tracking users continuously without explicit knowledge. This approach reduces the passive digital footprint and grants granular control over information shared with third-party applications.

Samsung: One UI 9 and phased deployment

Samsung has led the deployment in the non-Pixel segment with its One UI 9 layer, based on Android 17. The process began on September 16 in South Korea with the Galaxy S26 series and expanded on September 28 to the Galaxy S25, Galaxy Z Fold 7, and Galaxy Z Flip 7 series. As of October 20, the update continues to reach other models like the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy A series, maintaining a steady global distribution pace.

Availability in Spain depends on the carrier and device variant. Users of Galaxy S25 and Z Fold 7 in unlocked markets can already receive the update, while older models await the third phase, scheduled for late October. Samsung has confirmed the update includes security improvements and integrated AI tools, optimizing the user experience without compromising device stability.

New privacy and security features

Android 17 introduces a stricter approach to data protection. The temporary location access feature is the most significant change: instead of permanently allowing or denying, users can authorize location use only for the current session or a limited period. This reduces the risk of third-party apps accessing location in the background, a common vector for unwanted tracking.

Additionally, security tools for stolen or lost devices have been reinforced. The system allows remote phone locking and controlling access to specific app data. These improvements are enabled by default, though users can adjust them in Settings > Privacy > Permissions, ensuring an immediate additional layer of protection in emergency situations.

Xiaomi, Oppo, and other manufacturers: current status

Xiaomi has started deploying Android 17 on its Mi 13 and Redmi K60 models, although availability in Spain is still limited. The company confirmed the update will reach more devices in the coming weeks but has not published an exact date for the European market. Oppo and Realme users also await the ColorOS 17 version, expected for late October, completing the update cycle for their high-end ranges.

Unlike Samsung and Google, Chinese manufacturers follow a more staggered calendar. This means many mid-range and high-end users in Spain still do not have access to Android 17. The recommendation is to periodically check Settings > System Updates to detect the update's arrival, as distribution is usually gradual and depends on stability validation in each region.

How to check compatibility and update

To check if your device is compatible, go to Settings > About phone > System updates. If the option to download Android 17 appears, your phone is ready. If not, verify the model is on your manufacturer's official list, as not all devices will receive the update. It is crucial to confirm compatibility before waiting for the automatic notification to avoid confusion with beta or unofficial versions.

If the update does not arrive automatically, ensure you have at least 4 GB of free space and a battery level above 50%. In some cases, restarting the device or clearing the system cache can force update detection. For Samsung users, you can also check the status in the Samsung Members app, which offers detailed information on deployment progress in your specific region.
