ARRI's Image Science Arrives on the Smartphone
On August 12, 2026, HONOR launched the Robot Phone in China, the first commercial result of the strategic alliance with ARRI. The device integrates selected elements of ARRI Image Science and carries the designation co-engineered with ARRI, marking the debut of this imaging science in a consumer device. This launch materializes the collaboration announced in March 2026 during the Mobile World Congress, where both companies confirmed their intention to bring cinematic production standards to the mobile sphere.
For ARRI, this launch represents a significant milestone in its expansion into the Content Creation sector, complementing its traditional businesses in cinema and live entertainment. David Bermbach, Chief Product Officer at ARRI, noted that the collaboration allows more creators to access greater creative control and a stronger connection between capture and post-production.
What is the AiMAGE Engine and Its Role in the Device
The heart of the Robot Phone's image processing is AiMAGE, a comprehensive engine that operates at three levels: chip, device, and cloud. At the hardware level, it is based on an image signal processor (ISP) developed internally by HONOR and based on Transformer architecture, designed to reconstruct the photographic processing workflow from scratch.
This system combines state-of-the-art pixel technology with EVS sensors to improve image quality directly from the hardware. At the device level, AiMAGE synchronizes the gimbal's anti-vibration capabilities with real-time processing algorithms, while in the cloud it offers RAW image enhancement tools and an Imaging Agent package for content creation.
Adapting ARRI's Image Science to Mobile
The collaboration does not consist of adding filters, but in adapting fundamental principles of how a camera reproduces light, color, and contrast. According to ARRI, this adaptation required a specific implementation to work with smaller sensors, compact optics, and the demands of real-time computing, unlike professional ALEXA cameras.
The Robot Phone supports recording in 10-bit ARRI LogC3, which allows preserving more information in highlights, shadows, and color for post-production. Additionally, it incorporates ARRI Wide Gamut 3 for a wide color space and a selection of ARRI Looks that offers cinematic visual styles directly from the device screen.
The Robotic Gimbal as a Physical Differentiator
The Robot Phone incorporates the HONOR Titanium Agile Gimbal, a four-degree-of-freedom (4DoF) mechanical system integrated into the phone's body. This mechanism, made of titanium and composed of more than 100 precision components, allows stabilized movements, subject tracking, and hands-free operation.
HONOR claims that this system is 65% smaller and 200% more durable than conventional gimbals. The titanium motor weighs only 2.6 grams and reaches control speeds of up to 360 degrees per second, allowing the execution of automatic cinematic movements such as Tilt Lock, First Person View, and AI SpinShot.
Accredited Capabilities and Information Limits
Confirmed specifications include a camera system with a main module of 200 MP (1/1.28" sensor, f/1.6), a periscope telephoto lens of 200 MP (2.7x optical zoom), and an ultra-wide angle of 50 MP (122°). AI-based image processing improves the video signal-to-noise ratio by 8 dB and reaches up to 14 stops of dynamic range, according to data provided by the manufacturer.
The device allows exporting recorded material to professional applications like DaVinci Resolve to apply ARRI LUTs in post-production. Initial availability is limited to China, with prices of 9,999 RMB (12 GB/512 GB) and 12,999 RMB (16 GB/1 TB).
Implications for Creators and the Future of the Alliance
For content creators, this collaboration offers the possibility of working with professional workflows directly from a smartphone. Recording in LogC3 and compatibility with ARRI LUTs in editing tools allow integrating mobile capture into cinematic post-production processes.
The alliance includes the creation of a joint image technology laboratory that will explore three areas: sensor-level optics and dynamic range, end-to-end cinematic workflows, and aesthetic standards in the AI era. This collaboration has already extended to the HONOR Magic9 Pro Max, which incorporates the ARRI brand and elements of its image science.
